Jafaruddin Gets 'Key' for Balingian

KUCHING, 8 APRIL, 2011: Independent candidate Datuk Salleh Jafaruddin has got the 'key' to mount his challenge for the Balingian seat in the April 16 Sarawak state election.

The former education minister, who is facing Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud (BN-PBB) and businesswoman Suriati Abdullah (PKR) in the contest, was assigned the key symbol for the election.

The aeroplane symbol was the most sought after out of 30 symbols provided by the Election Commission (EC). The key came second.

Other symbols included flower, tree, house, fish, bird, chair, spectacles and pen.

Another notable candidate, Dominique Ng Kim Ho, who is contesting as an independent in Padungan after falling out with PKR, got the flower symbol.

Ng, the incumbent, is involved in a three-cornered fight with Sim Kiang Chiok (BN-SUPP) and Wong King Wei (DAP).

Sarawak EC director Datu Takun Sunggah told Bernama independent candidates were free to choose their symbols but draws would be made if there was no agreement among themselves for seats where there were more than one independent candidate.
