Candidates, Parties Urged Not to Humiliate Opponents

KUCHING, 8 APRIL, 2011: Candidates and political parties contesting in the Sarawak state election have been asked to refrain from criticising their opponents by putting up banners and distributing pamphlets to the extent of humiliating them because such acts were against the election law.

State Election Commission (EC) Director Datu Takun Sunggah said the election campaign should be used to highlight the candidates' or their party's strength.

"This is the time for them to show that they are better than their opponents instead of humiliating or belittling them. The campaign should be carried out in a clean manner," he told Bernama, here today.

He said this when commenting on several incidents where candidates had put up banners and distributed pamphlets insulting the opposing parties and candidates.

Yesterday, Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) president Tan Sri Dr George Chan had lodged a police report on the content of a pamphlet distributed by the DAP which gave the impression that the Barisan Nasional (BN) government was corrupt.

However, Datu Takun said the campaign carried out by the political parties had been going on smoothly without any serious problems reported to him or the police.

"There were no serious incidents. The problems that had cropped up were minor and could be controlled by the EC and police," he said.

He advised the candidates and contesting parties to abide by the regulations and to be courteous when campaigning to ensure a smooth election.

He said that so far, there had been no report of any candidate withdrawing from the contest.

Candidates wishing to withdraw from the poll can do so until midnight tomorrow.

Polling for the 10th Sarawak state election will be on April 16.
