Only 50 supporters allowed to accompany candidate for nomination

KUCHING, April 50 (Bernama) -- Not more than 50 supporters are allowed to accompany a candidate for nomination tomorrow for the Sarawak election on April 16.

The other supporters cannot be near the nomination venue, Election Commission chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof said today.

Musical instruments such as trumpets and drums and loud hailers are also forbidden, he told reporters at the Kuching South City Hall building here.

"Musical instruments brought to a nomination centre will be confiscated by police. Sometimes supporters put the instruments on top of cars. This is also not allowed," he said.

Abdul Aziz said that police had assigned routes for supporters to follow and places for them to assemble at all 71 nomination centres, but the gathering should not be too large.

"Supporters are requested to observe good conduct. Don't utter unpleasant or provocative words. The people of Sarawak are good. I hope this customary good behaviour is continued," he said.

Abdul Aziz also said that 883 nomination forms had been bought until 10am today.

"This does not necessarily mean that many people will contest in the election. There are people who buy several sets because they fear making mistakes when filling the forms," he added.

Abdul Aziz noted that the 10-day campaign period, beginning tomorrow, is a day shorter than the duration for the 2006 polls.
