More Women Candidates For Sarawak Election
KUCHING, April 6 (Bernama) -- The 10th Sarawak state election will see a record number of 16 women candidates from the various parties as well as independents contesting.

Barisan Nasional is retaining all four women incumbents to contest in the April 16 election, including the incumbent for the Lingga state seat, Simoi Peri.

The three others are Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali (Samariang) and Datin Fatimah Abdullah (Dalat) from Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), and Rosey Yunus (Bekenu) from the Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP).

Meanwhile, the DAP retained two incumbents namely Violet Yong (Pending) and Ting Tze Fui (Meradong), besides fielding two new faces, DAP Sibu branch Women's head Alice Lau Kiong Yieng in Bawang Assan and Christina Chiew in Batu Kawah.

Meanwhile, PAS, which is contesting in five constituencies, fielded two women, namely Nani Sahari in Tanjung Datu and Noraini Hamzah in Muara Tuang.

Parti Cinta Malaysia, which is contesting for the first time after the party's registration and symbol were approved by the Registrar of Societies, fielded a woman, Dyg Juliana Awg Tambi in Bekenu.

Parti Keadilan Rakyat, meanwhile, fielded four women including a sundry shop owner in Mukah, Suriati Abdullah, 50, in Balingian, Zolhaidah Suboh (Lambir) and Ibi anak Udin in Balai Ringin.

Another woman, Soo Lina is contesting as an independent in Batu Lintang.
