Opposition desperate, banking on personal attacks, says SUPP chief

MIRI, April 8 (Bernama) -- The opposition's tactic of waging personal attacks against Sarawak leaders shows they are very desperate to win votes in the state election, said Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) president Tan Sri Dr George Chan.
He said the Barisan Nasional had already expected the opposition to bank on this tactic as they did not have any hard issues to raise.
"This only shows their cowardice and they are running out of issues," he told a press conference at SUPP's Miri office here today.
He was asked to comment on an alleged opposition tactic of circulating SMS messages aimed at tarnishing the image of Sarawak BN chairman and Chief Minister, Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.
Dr Chan said the public should doubt the allegations made by the opposition as they failed to substantiate them with facts.
On the opposition's claim that the state government practiced favouritism in alienating land for large oil palm plantation projects, he said it had never been the case.
He said the government encouraged companies with proven financial capability to embark on large oil palm plantations so that they could build palm oil mills, which would also benefit small-holders as they would be able to sell their produce to the mills.
"If we were to appoint small companies, they will not have the money to build the mills and who will be at a loss? Surely the smallholders as well," he added.
