Sarawak Police Approve 200 Ceramah Permits

KUCHING, 8 APRIL, 2011: Police have approved 200 ceramah permits to the contesting parties in their campaign for the 10th Sarawak state election, state police chief Datuk Mohmad Salleh said.

He said approvals were given fairly among parties from the ruling coalition, opposition parties and independent candidates.

"The number of permit is quite big because there are 214 candidates contesting in this election," he told a news conference, here.

He said police would consider all permit applications from any party as long as they do not undermine security and public order in the places where they are campaigning.

Despite the police's accommodative approach, however, there were still parties holding ceramah without any permit, he said.

Police have so far received 16 reports in relation to the conduct of the state election, including ceramah held without permits.

Police also received a report about election posters being torn down in Miri, he said.

Security was under control so far, he said, adding that they were closely monitoring the situation.

The campaign period ends on the midnight of April 15. Polling is on April 16.
